Welcome to the River City!
Southern Indiana's Evansville was originally settled in 1812, and it has grown to become the third-largest city in Indiana, trailing only Indianapolis and Fort Wayne. The city is the county seat of Vanderburgh County, and its current population far exceeds the 100,000 resident mark - it boasts itself as the largest city in the Illinois-Indiana-Kentucky Tri-State area. Resting on the northern banks of the Ohio River, just some 30 miles northwest and across the river from Owensboro, KY, Evansville is the home to Casino Aztar (the first riverboat casino in Indiana), the University of Evansville and the University of Southern Indiana.
Other features of Evansville that you won't want to miss include: The Evansville Museum of Arts, History and Science, the Angel Mounds State Historic Site, Mesker Park Zoo, the Koch Family Children's Museum of Evansville, and Burdette Park, which features an aquatic center with water slides, three pools and a snack bar. Burdette also features batting cages, softball diamonds, a BMX racing track, tennis courts, miniature golf and locations for fishing.
Evansville lies just a few hours' drive from Louisville, KY, from Nashville, TN, and from St. Louis, MO. Other nearby cities and towns include Newburgh, Chandler, Boonville, Gentryville and Lincoln City (Indiana side of the border), as well as Owensboro, Masonville, Pettit, Philpot, Utica, Sorgho and Birk City (Kentucky side).
If you happen to be in Evansville in July, the city hosts the US Navy's Blue Angels and the Canadian Forces Snowbirds for the Evansville Freedom Festival. The month of August features Thunder on the Ohio, a hydroplane boat race in the H1 Unlimited season. And during the first week of October, be sure not to miss the West Side Nut Club Fall Festival, a week-long food festival, second in size only to the annual Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans, LA.
